Mansions Past

Lost Forever

Not just Hurricane Camille, but also losses due to other calamities such as fire or willful demolition has resulted in decimating many of the original old homes of Pass Christian.  The West End as it was once called has lost many houses.  Just driving westward on West Beach Boulevard leaves a sense of virgin lands which have remained undeveloped.  Prior to Hurricane Camille there were only three vacant lots on Hwy 90 ranging from Henderson Avenue to the curve at Henderson Point.
Along that route were many of the oldest homes that fronted this shoreline because not only John Henderson, but Edward Livingston before him, had sold lots to such early builders as Mrs. Plum, who may have built the first house in the area in the early 1800s, and there was the Knox house, and the Calvert house, as well as others.  John Henderson built his private residence at several places because he would sell each one to any willing buyer.  When he built houses he also built roads to get to them.  On occasions he would buy them back at a higher price than he sold them for, only to turn around and sell them at an even greater profit.
Some of the lost houses include those that the Henderson’s have been credited for constructing.  Since the original great loss to Camille, a number of new homes have replaced the many that were lost.  In some cases small subdivisions now stand where plantation style mansions once existed.  In many cases, complimenting vintage structures have been rebuilt, while others can be credited for having restored their homes in architectural styles that conformed with Pass Christian's past heritage.
